It is beneficial to have a basic understanding of what the chakras are and how they help us function, but for the purpose of learning how to meditate we will concentrate our efforts on only one chakra.  This will be chakra number six, called the Third Eye Chakra.

We count the chakras, from one to seven, beginning at the base chakra (one) and working up to the crown chakra (seven).

The first three chakras are what I call "physical chakras" because these are the only chakras most people ever experience while in the physical body on the physical plane.  They represet the mundane, the day to day, survival, security, physical desires, etc.

Chakra One (the base or root chakra) is the center of security in the physical body.  If one's well being is threatened, one will feel it in the base chakra.  Our fears are centered here as well.  The color associated with the root chakra is RED.

Chakra Two (the spleen or sacral chakra) is the second of the physical chakras.  The spleen chakra is the center for sexual function and desire for material possessions and pleasurable sensations.  We also hold addictions and obsessions here.  The sacral chakra is the seat of our personal identities.  The spleen chakra is ORANGE.

Third in the physical chakra category is the Solar Plexus Chakra.  This is the area of functioning that most people live from day to day.  If you have ulcers, you likely live from the solar plexus.  This is the center for our personal expressions of power.  Some people use their terrible tempers, hostility or outward shows of force to manipulate others.  Others may offer up "help" instead of "control", disguising their tempers to fool those around them.  The solar plexus is yellow.

Chakra FOUR:  The Heart Chakra.  This is the bridge between the 3 physical chakras below it and the 3 spiritual chakras above it.  The heart chakra is not entirely physical or spiritual, but can exhibit exclusive characteristics of one or the other if the person is not balanced.  When functioning properly, a person's heart chakra is a blend of physicality and spirituality.  This is the center for love.  Love can be purely physical, purely spiritual, or both.  We we access this chakra we learn to love unconditionally.  When we have done this - and only then! - we can move up and on to access the spiritual chakras.  This chakra is traditionally green, but modern interpretations accept that it is pink.  Both are correct, so choose the color that resonates with you.

Chakra 5:  The Throat Chakra.  The first of the spiritual chakras, the throat chakra is the center for harmony and creative communicative ability.  If this chakra is blocked we cannot communicate, we cannot create.  This makes us feel separate from everything else.  Writer's block occurs in this chakra.  When this center of harmony is not functioning, a person's very existence will seem to have no meaning.  The throat chakra is BLUE.

Chakra Six:  The Third Eye Chakra.  For meditation purposes, the third eye chakra is of utmost importance.  It is here that we focus our attention during meditation.  This is the center for "higher thought" and "higher emotion".  When functioning properly, the five senses culminate here and operate as one.  Psychics use the insight they receive by accessing the third eye.  This is called the sixth sense.  When this chakra is blocked we cannot make the best decisions and we find ourselves choosing shadow over substance.  The third eye chakra is a deep, bluish violet (indigo) in color.

Chakra Seven:  The Crown Chakra.  Spiritually, this is the highest of the chakras.  It is the center for God-Realization.  When accessed, we understand the true meaning of Unity and Oneness.  We no longer see the Self as being separate as our awareness from the crown chakra is pure.  The halos depicted in seligious art are the illuminated crown chakras of pure awareness.  This chakra is silvery white, the brightest white you could imagine.  It extends up and away from the body, toward the heavens, to the Source.

As I said, it's good to have a basic knowledge of all the major chakras, but for meditating, we will be focusing on the Third Eye Chakra.

"If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light."

~ Matthew 6:22

Once you begin to meditate properly you will actually begin to see this light!  You will not "visualize" it or merely think about it, but with persistence you will see it!

At first, it may be a pin-point of  bright white-silver light that seems to vibrate.  Once you begin to see this light you will have begun to access the blissful, peaceful state of awareness many call "Nirvana".  With this awareness will come a greater calm throughout all areas of your life.

With continued third eye meditation you will eventually see what is sometimes called the Trinity of Creation - a five pointed star within a triangle within a circle.  When you see this and can meditate on the image for any length of time you will have accessed the seventh chakra, the chakra of realization.
